I want to have tanned skin!
In the desert, try to avoid getting tanned. Do that when you are in a resort in Thailand or Hawaii, just not in the Sahara or other desert. Under the heat of a HOT desert, it is very easy to get heat stroke.
Heat stroke does not happen as soon as you step into the desert, but it slowly gets to you, like a cold. You start with a sore throat, then you start sneezing, afterwards you cough really hard. There is progression like in a heat stroke.
Heat stroke is very dangerous because it can damage the brain and other internal organs. There are several symptoms that associates heat stroke:
1) Heat cramps
2) Heat exhaustion
3) Throbbing headache
4) Lack of sweating despite the sweltering weather in a desert.
5) Red, hot and dry skin
6) Muscle weakness or cramps
7) Nausea and vomiting
8) Rapid heartbeat
9) Rapid and shallow breathing
10) Confusion, disorientation or staggering
11) Seizures
12) Unconsciousness
Even if you are very certain that you have heat stroke, there is nothing much to do but to stay in a shady area and prevent future water loss. If you have a water source, it is very important you take in large amounts of water.
Heat stroke is often accompanied with dehydration. You may find that your urine is darker colored. The best you could do is to have a large intake of glucose. Sports beverages are found with very high levels of glucose, good idea to maybe GULP it down if you have it. It is not the time to wonder how much calories there is in it.
Heat can also cause illusions. The most well known one is mirages, seeing water when there isn't. But the most deadly one is the illusion of making a long distance look like a short walk. So beware, if you find a distance really short in the desert, you might want to double check, triple check, quad check....
